  127. INTERNET HYPE

  129. Have you noticed how many people have jumped on the Internet "super-
  130. higway" bandwagon lately.  You know what really makes me laugh is
  131. watching the pinhead TV people, who barely know how to turn on a
  132. computer, try to hype it.  It's just like alternative and progressive
  133. rock, the big companies jump on it because of the $$$ and not because
  134. they like or enjoy it.  It is just the in-thing to do...
  135.  
  136. I do expect the Internet hype to start falling off after the mom-pop
  137. croud finally realize that it isn't a cake walk.  Most people can't
  138. even download files from a BBS, let alone trying to FTP a file
  139. across the country using the UNIX shell.  The Internet is not fluffy
  140. enough yet for most of the world to use.  Also, what are these
  141. people going to think when their kids can get access to ALT.SEX
  142. newsgroups and a ton of other adult material.  <grin>

  148. NEW MODEM / SOUND CARD CHIPSET
  149.  
  150. Sierra Semiconductor has shown off a v.32bis chip set that interfaces
  151. directly to the new OPL4 wavetable synthesis chip from Yamaha.  They
  152. plan to update the chipset to v.34 later.  You should expect sound
  153. cards with modem capabilites in the near future!

  157. MICROSOFT WWW EDITOR
  158.  
  159. Microsoft has announced a WWW (World Wide Web) HTML editor add-on for
  160. Word 6.0.  There will be two versions of the product with different
  161. level of features.  We should have more details in the near future.

  165. INTERNET IP SPOOF DANGER
  166.  
  167. The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), a federally funded
  168. organization that monitors security events, issued an advisory
  169. alerting network managers to guard against IP spoofing.  This warning
  170. followed a report by a San Diego Super Coputer Center where the it
  171. happened.
  172.  
  173. The hackers were using a fairly simple concept...watch traffic moving
  174. back and forth between two computers.  Capture the IP address of all
  175. computers talking to the computer you are interested in getting into
  176. and then try to connect with that IP address.  Many computers only
  177. look for exact IP address matches and nothing else, so connection
  178. is very easy!
  179.  
  180. The bottom line, don't rely on IP address-based authentication.  Use
  181. Encryption-based authentication and dynamic password control. Install
  182. an Internet firewall capable of reverse address resolution, under
  183. which a packet's IP source address can be checked against a physical
  184. location of the computer it came from.

  188. COMPUSERVE LOWERS COST
  189.  
  190. CompuServe has announced an overall lower cost for their users.  The
  191. monthly charge will raise from $8.95 to $9.95 but thier hourly fee
  192. will drop from $9.60 to $4.80 for all access speeds.

  196. GIF ROYALTIES
  197.  
  198. All developers who use the GIF format have been told by Compuserve
  199. to pay royalties.  The GIF standard has long thought to be available
  200. for free.  Unisys Corp owns a patent on the LZW compression algorithm
  201. used in all GIF files.  They have negotiated a deal with Compuserve
  202. to enable it to recover royalites.  The royalty is 1.5 percent for
  203. each registered copy of software that uses GIF.  End users are not
  204. directly affected by the actions.
  205.  
  206. Unisys said it intends to enforce its patent by pursuing companies
  207. that build software for the commercial market, but those that provide
  208. FREEWARE are immune to liability.
  209.  
  210. CompuServe is working on a GIF replacement that does not use the
  211. Unisys compression algorithm and will offer support for 24bit color.

  215. MPEG-4 RUMORS
  216.  
  217. It is rumored that MPEG-4 will support very low bit rate audio and
  218. video schemes for slower than 64Kbit/sec phone line use.  It is
  219. expected to achieve international-standard status by November 1998.
  220.  
  221. In the short term, Microsoft plans to put TrueSpeech in Windows 95,
  222. which supports 8.5kbit/sec play back on a 386 25Mhz machine.  You
  223. can expect PC-based voice mail functions to be integrated or very
  224. close behind Windows 95.
  225.  
  226. For your information, all rates faster than 64Kbit/sec uses the H.321
  227. standard already in place for video, speech, and multiplexing.

  231. INTEL CPU PRICE CUTS

  233. Expect CPU prices to be slashed in February and May to combat against
  234. competing CPU makers!  In May, expect the price of the 100MHz DX4 CPU
  235. to be about 40% of the price it was last Christmas.

  239. INTEL P6 (FOLLOW-UP)

  241. What's after the Pentium?  Intel's internally code named P6 will have
  242. a 128-bit external bus, a 256K level-2 cache integrated into the CPU
  243. chip, four processor cores (compared to 2 in Pentium), and conversion
  244. process that will translate existing x86 code into RISC-like opcodes
  245. that which will increase the performance of existing applications
  246. without recompiling.

  248. Intel is already shipping engineering samples to manufactuerers and
  249. expect to sell 200K by the end of the year.

  253. INTEL CPU ERRATA (BUGS)

  255. Because of the lousy way Intel handled the most recent Pentium bug,
  256. they have decided to publish errata on a quarterly basis, starting
  257. this quarter (by end of March).  Also, they will start putting better
  258. identification on its chips to make it easier for users to identify
  259. particular chips.  Also, they have a 4 step process to validate flaws
  260. and release information about them.  If you can document a flaw in
  261. one of their CPU's, call (800)628-8686.  I'm sure they would like to
  262. hear from you.  <grin>

  266. FUTURE DRAM SIZE PREDICTIONS

  268. The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has released it's
  269. projection for future DRAM memory development in the USA.

  280. FUTURE DOMAIN IDE CARD

  282. Future Domain Corp, maker of PC-based SCSI cards, has announced they
  283. will be producing an Enhanced IDE card.  No details available...

  287. 10,000 RPM HARD DRIVES
  288.  
  289. Since most of the hard drive makers are moving their upper-end drives
  290. from 5,400 RPM to 7,200 RPM, they are forcing some of makers to move
  291. into the 10,000 RPM arena.  I expect to see this happen this year.

  295. DVD CDROM (FOLLOW-UP)
  296.  
  297. Hollywood and many big name consumer electronic giants joined to back
  298. a new digitial video disk (DVD) system from Toshiba and Time-Warner.
  299. They expect this CD to replace VHS videotapes in the future because
  300. of its new digital features.
  301.  
  302. The disk standard specs either one or two sides (where double-sided
  303. is two half thickness disks glued together).  One side holds 5gig and
  304. two sides hold 10gig.  For high quality image movies, 74min/side and
  305. lower quality at 135min/side.
  306.  
  307. Hollywoods wish list included the ability to do full-length feature
  308. film (135min) on a single disk, picture quality similar to current
  309. laser disks, capacity for 3 to 5 languages, audio in matrixed digital
  310. surround-sound, copy protection, multiple aspect ratio, choice of
  311. subtitles or dubs, multiple versions of the same program on one disk,
  312. parental-lockout feature.  They stated the new format exceeds all of
  313. these listed wish list items.

  315. Expect a player in June 1996 at $499 and disks at $30.

  319. HDCD CDROM (FOLLOW-UP)

  321. Sony and Philips are getting ready to announce an enhanced CD spec
  322. called High-density CD (HDCD).  Microsoft plans to support the new
  323. standard under Windows 95.  The new format is scheduled to be
  324. announced by the end of February.  No announcements on ship dates.
  325.  
  326. This new standard is unique in that it is a double-layer, single-
  327. sided disk.  One layer supports 3.7gig and two layer supports 7.4gig.

  331. CDROM STANDARDS BATTLE

  333. Can you believe there will be two new standards not compatible with
  334. each other?  Hopefully someone will make one or the other the main
  335. standard BUT more than likely, the public will be the deciding vote,
  336. just like VHS vs BETA.

  338. It is also rumored that Matsushita may help decide the final blow to
  339. one or the other since they make so many home consumer items.

  343. NEW MIDI XG STANDARD
  344.  
  345. Yamaha has disclosed plans for a next-generation MIDI standard.  It
  346. will change the number of "voices" from 128 to 650, as well as add
  347. voice editing, digital effects, and external-input capability.

  349. There is another proprietary extension known as MIDI GS by Roland.
  350. It is expexted to be confusion and a battle to come about...

  356. Microsoft has stated that it plans to ship drivers for the 100Mbit/S
  357. serial link (known as FireWire) in Windows 95.

  359. It is rumored that Europe's Digital VCR consortium is seriously
  360. considering adopting FireWire as its interface.
